Belfast International Airport Duty Free and Retail Areas

At Piperhill Construction, we know that airports are more than just transport hubs — they’re places of experience, anticipation, and discovery. That’s why we were so excited to lead the delivery of the all-new duty-free and retail areas at Belfast International Airport as part of a landmark £25 million redevelopment project.

This wasn’t just a refresh — it was a complete transformation of the passenger journey. Working closely with VINCI Airports and Lagardère Travel Retail, we reimagined over 2,000 square metres of internal space to create immersive, high-quality commercial zones that now host a new-look duty-free shopping area, car hire desks, and upgraded staff facilities.

The design brief was ambitious: blend functionality, style, and flow to enhance the passenger experience and make shopping a seamless part of the airport journey. From luxury goods and travel essentials to contemporary finishes and ambient lighting, every element was carefully delivered to match world-class airport retail standards.
We carried out extensive internal refurbishments within the existing terminal, integrating new M&E systems and structural modifications without disrupting the day-to-day operation of the airport. That meant carefully phased works, consistent collaboration with multiple stakeholders, and tight control of logistics — particularly when it came to crane operations, deliveries, and public-facing areas.

This project meant a lot to us personally — not only because it was our largest contract to date, but because it was right here on our doorstep in Northern Ireland. We made it a priority to engage local subcontractors and suppliers throughout the works, helping to create a ripple effect of growth and opportunity across the region.
We’re proud to say that feedback from passengers and airport staff has been overwhelmingly positive. The new retail areas not only elevate the airport’s look and feel but also set the tone for the next chapter of travel through Belfast.
